2006 The Land Northern Beef Week Open Day 
Once again Barana participated in The Land Northern Beef Week 2006 with our Open Day on 23rd June. Our Open Day saw similar numbers as last year with 35 past & prospective clients from around the state visiting to view our breeding herd & sale bulls. Feedback was positive from visitors who traveled from as far south as Bemboka to Wee Waa in the north. It was particularly pleasing to have contact with clients who were keen to use Simmental for the first time in their herd. Like other producers in the eastern states we have been feeling the effects of the ongoing drought as we go into our fifth winter of hand feeding. Consequently, this year’s sale bulls have been grazed on a failed forage sorghum crop. Under normal circumstances, we do not feed our bulls grain but due to seasonal conditions we have supplementary fed Ridleys custom bull ration since late May to maintain condition. At our seventh on-property sale we will be offering 60 bulls, polled & horned. The bulls have been selected for their easy-doing ability, well muscled, sound structure & early to mid maturity pattern. On the day you will see these bulls at their natural best with no clipping or foot trimming being done on any animal presented.
As in the past, objective data will be available for each bull & all inspections & guarantees you have come to expect from Barana will be provided. All bulls will pass stringent tests for breeding & soundness with the appropriate Veterinary Soundness Certificate provided. These bulls will also be semen tested, serving capacity tested, Breedplan recorded, scanned for EMA, FAT & IMF, Genestar [Marbling] & tenderness tested & vaccinated for Vibrio. Barana has Johnes Status MN2. This will be our fourth year of testing bulls for GeneStar marbling & tenderness as we continue to identify those cattle which carry these sought after traits. In fact, Simmental Australia’s GeneStar Marbling & Beef Tenderness Gene Marker Tests show that “excellent results have been received to date from the testing of over 200 Australian Simmentals with 13% testing 2 star, well above the 9% incidence found in tested Black Angus”. Free cartage will be offered within a 300 km radius of Barana and for interstate buyers, free cartage along the major route from Coolah to Goondiwindi & from Coolah to Wodonga.
